Things went horribly wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a spoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer level of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You question about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?

Awful Day Ever
It all started with a case of bedhead hair. I couldn't do it to look decent. As I was running out the door, I trippedover and gracefully all over the carpet. To make matters worse, I was completely behind schedule for work.
I arrived. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was a complete disaster.
The rest here of the day was even worse. was a catastrophe. I stay awake.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
